Google Unveils Seamless PC Backup and Sync Tool

In a move to streamline cloud storage and backup, Google has introduced Backup and Sync, a powerful tool designed to simplify how users protect their PC data. This new application merges the functionalities of Google Drive and Google Photos, offering a single, unified platform for backing up files, folders, and photos to the cloud. With Backup and Sync, users can select specific folders or even their entire computer for automatic backup, ensuring their data is safe and accessible from anywhere. While not a full system restore solution, it provides a robust way to protect crucial files and media. As of today, June 11, 2025, Backup and Sync has been discontinued and has been replaced by Google Drive for desktop. Drive for desktop provides similar, and improved upon features.

Effortless Backup and Synchronization

The Backup and Sync tool presents a straightforward setup process. After downloading and installing the application, users sign in with their Google account. They then select the folders they wish to back up, choosing between syncing with Google Drive and backing up to Google Photos. Syncing with Drive mirrors changes between the local folder and the cloud, ensuring consistency across devices. Backing up to Photos focuses solely on photos and videos, offering unlimited storage for high-quality images. The tool also provides options for syncing external storage devices, such as USB drives and SD cards, broadening its versatility for diverse backup needs. Note that, as of today, the ‘computers’ section of your google drive is now named, simply, ‘computers’.

Backup and Sync in Business Settings

Initially designed for consumers, Backup and Sync also offered benefits for businesses, though G Suite customers were encouraged to utilize Drive File Stream, Google’s enterprise-focused backup solution. Drive File Stream allowed businesses to access large datasets without storing them locally, saving disk space and bandwidth. However, Backup and Sync still proved valuable for smaller businesses seeking a simple and affordable backup option. Google has combined the best features of Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream into Drive for Desktop.

Understanding Google Drive for desktop

Google Drive for desktop continues to offer the core backup features found in its predecessor. This new version features two primary sync modes: Mirroring and Streaming. Mirroring creates identical copies of your files both on your local machine and in the cloud, allowing you to access them even when offline. Streaming, on the other hand, keeps your files primarily in the cloud, saving local disk space. Files are only downloaded when you access them, though you can also mark specific files for offline availability.

Beyond Basic Backup

While Backup and Sync and now, Google Drive for desktop, excel at keeping files safe in the cloud, it’s crucial to remember its limitations. It primarily focuses on file and photo backup, not full system recovery. In the event of a computer crash, it won’t restore your operating system or applications. Therefore, maintaining a separate system restore tool alongside Google Drive for desktop is highly recommended for comprehensive data protection.

  1. The distinction between mirroring and streaming in Google Drive for desktop is interesting. How might businesses strategize about which sync mode is most appropriate for different departments or types of data?

    • That’s a great question! Thinking about departments, Marketing might prioritize mirroring for quick access to campaign assets, while Finance could use streaming for sensitive data, keeping it primarily in the cloud. Data sensitivity and access speed are key factors! What other factors do you think would be important?
